Frequently Asked Questions

FAQs for UNIVERSAL TRANSITIONAL KINDERGARTEN (UTK)

What is the difference between Transitional Kindergarten (TK) and Early Transitional Kindergarten (TE)?
UTK Age Range

If my child is of Universal Transitional Kindergarten age, can I request kindergarten placement instead?
  • No. Universal Transitional Kindergarten age requirements are state law and no exceptions are made throughout LAUSD.
If my child is of Kindergarten age, can I request Universal Transitional Kindergarten placement instead?
  • No. Lanai is unable to make exceptions for students who turned 5 before September 2.

Can I choose the teacher with whom I think my child would work well?
  • Teacher requests are not necessary, as our UTK program utilizes a team teaching approach so all students work with both teachers. Students move between classrooms daily, so if transitions are difficult for your child, please consider if this program is appropriate.

If we do not live in the Lanai Road boundaries, can we attend Lanai?
  • Lanai is a neighborhood school which means it must enroll resident students within school boundaries before granting permits to non-resident students. Lanai Road Elementary will be at capacity with resident students for the 2024-2025 school year.  As a result, Lanai Road Elementary will not be recommending any INITIAL Intra-District Permits for the 2024-2025 school year.

Lanai is not preventing any parent/guardian from submitting an INITIAL permit application, we are simply notifying applicants that INITIAL permit applications will not be recommended due to School is at Capacity. Click here for Non-Resident information.
