Best Buy Technology Grant $2500 Best Buy gift card awarded to second grade teacher Robert Chesler’s classroom for demonstrating a program that uses interactive technology to make learning fun for students. Mr. Chesler’s students are motivated to learn by working on the classroom’s own Website www.room17express.org conducting research on the Internet, incorporating their digital photos into projects, importing graphics, preparing PowerPoint presentations and reinforcing language arts and math skills through the use of interactive games.

Commendation from the City of Los Angeles On February 4, 2005 Lanai Road School, its administration, staff, teachers, students, parents and community were honored by Councilman Jack Weiss at City Hall with a commendation recognizing Lanai’s extraordinary accomplishments in academic achievement and parent and community involvement. Accepting the award on Lanai’s behalf were Principal Latham, Asst. Principal McIntire, Teacher Jennifer Taylor and her Fifth Grade Class.

Most Improved LAUSD School Title One and API.2004 Music Center Bravo Award Nominee The Bravo Award was established by the Music Center Education Division to recognize teachers and schools for creativity, innovation and excellence in arts education. Grant authored by Principal Latham-Wilson and teacher Jennifer Taylor.
Wonder of Reading Literacy Grant $5,000 grant to purchase new books for our library. The books (fiction, nonfiction and reference) will be integrated and complement Lanai’s existing Garden project.
 
District One Outstanding Student Attendance Award - For improved student attendance and achieving 96% student attendance for the 2003/2004 school year.
British Petroleum A+ for Energy Grant $10,000 grant to be used to purchase and install a solar powered hot water heater and sink located near the planting beds at the back of school. Fourth graders will be participating in standards based activities that will explain the process, technology and use of the sun’s energy for heating homes and water.
 
Anne & Kirk Douglas Playground Award Approximately $25,000 matching grant for secondary (grades 3-5) playground equipment project.
 
Encino Chamber of Commerce Teacher of the Year Award to Ingrid Johnson $1,000 in gifts and prizes, selected from among 16 other area schools. This is the second consecutive year that a Lanai Road teacher has garnered this award.
