Lanai Weekly: May 20 - 24, 2019

Principal’s Message:

Dear Parents,

This has been a week full of smiles - especially on Tuesday night!  It was our annual Open House and every classroom was bursting with the amazing work our students have engaged in all year.  It was lovely seeing the students proudly sharing their writing, science labs, math, research reports, art, and computer presentations.  In addition, most students visited upcoming classrooms to get a “preview” of next year. The excitement for 2019-20 is building already!

On another note, SBAC testing has commenced in grades 3 - 5.  Please make sure that your child is on time to school each morning and has eaten a good breakfast.  Also, a good night’s sleep is imperative as the tests require concentration and reasoning. Parents will be able to access their child’s results via the Parent Portal over the summer.  Scores will not be sent home. Please see Jody in the Parent Center; she will provide you with your PIN code to help set up your account.

On a final note, it was lovely meeting many of our incoming families at the Meet and Mingle night on Thursday.  The new families I met, are super-excited to come to Lanai and are certain to participate in their child’s education!  A few even mentioned that they were former Lanai students—once a lion, always a lion!

Happy weekend!

Lisa Elan

Measure EE - What is it? On June 4, voters living in LAUSD boundaries will cast ballots on Measure EE, Quality Schools for All — a per-square-foot parcel tax on habitable structures. Passing Measure EE is a critical step in our 20 by 20 campaign to reach $20,000 in per-pupil funding by the year 2020. Homeowners would pay 16 cents per square foot on buildings (the taxable square footage listed on property tax bills) located on taxable parcels within Los Angeles Unified boundaries. The tax does not apply to land. Measure EE will not interfere with existing or new rent stabilization ordinances. Measure EE includes exemptions for property owners over 65 and certain disability recipients.

By law, Measure EE funds are dedicated to:

  • Lowering class sizes

  • Attracting and retaining high quality teachers and school employees

  • Providing equitable school nursing, library and counseling services

  • Providing safe, secure, clean, well-maintained, supportive and welcoming schools

  • Supporting special needs, homeless, foster, & other underserved and disadvantaged students
