Dear Lanai Road Families,
This week has been jam-packed with all kinds of fun for our students! On Monday, our fifth graders went to Pali Camp for a great end-of-year experience! They did a high ropes course, Variety Show, Balloon Rescue and “bonding” experiences. The weather was cooler than usual but seeing the mist among the mountains was amazing! This will be a trip they will always remember.
Friday was such a busy day, that three principals were needed to run the school! Luckily, Principal Sophie and Principal Shiva were here to help. They helped out with the inclement weather and made the decision to postpone our Israeli Independence Day celebration until Monday when the weather will be better. In addition, Principal Shiva and Principal Sophie visited with some of our prospective parents on our school tour. Their advice to the incoming families is for children to walk in the halls, listen to the teachers, and when it’s raining everyone should walk under the awnings. They both took time out from their busy day to visit the classrooms and tell the students what a good job of learning they are doing and how much they appreciate the hard work the teachers, TAs and staff are doing. Finally, as all principals know, taking time for lunch is super important, (this job requires lots of energy)! To that end, Principal Sophie and Principal Shiva had lunch with their friends in the Principal’s office! It’s a great day to be a principal!
Finally, I wish all the moms a very Happy Mother’s Day! This is one of my favorite holidays—handmade cards, runny eggs, and flowers made out of tissue paper—what can be better?

Our final All Parents Team Meeting and Coffee with the Principal will be held on Wednesday, May 15 at 8:30 in the Parent Center. All are welcome to participate. Refreshments will be served.
FROM THE SCHOOL OFFICE:
Important: If your child has crutches/cast/stitches/staples, please make sure that your child hands in a doctor’s note to Jane in the office!
Classroom messages during SBAC testing - Due to state testing in classrooms May 16 - 31, phone messages will not be forwarded to students in class in 3rd through 5th grade. Please communicate your arrangements with your child (lunch/snack delivery, playdates, pick-up times, etc.) prior to the school day beginning.
Parent Portal Sign-up - What is Parent Portal and why do I need to sign up? The Parent Portal is your one-stop online system that connects parents/guardians to their student’s essential data. You will be able to view their attendance, assignments and grades and other important information. For families with 3rd to 5th graders, all state testing scores will be posted in your child’s online account as LAUSD has eliminated the mailing of results. To sign up for Parent Portal, visit https://achieve.lausd.net/Page/10470. Individual PIN numbers were sent home via mail by LAUSD to each legal parent/guardian. You can also contact Jody Chow in the Parent Center at firstname.lastname@example.org for access to your PIN and child’s student ID number (found on their report card). Feel free to drop into the Parent Center from 8:30 am to 12:00 pm daily for assistance in enrolling.
2nd Grade PE Volunteers Needed - In an effort to help Coach PJ, we have created ONE sign-up sheet for all 2nd grade PE volunteers. Coach PJ realizes this time slot is very tough for some parents, but it is very difficult for him to properly instruct the grade when there aren't volunteers. https://www.signupgenius.com/go/70A0C48A9A62BAAFF2-pe2
You can add credit, pay your balance and see your child's cafeteria history online by going to: https://www2.mypaymentsplus.com/welcome. You will need your child's school ID (found on their report card or call the school office). Alternately, you can visit the cafeteria in person between the hours of 7:30 am and 2:30 pm to pay by cash. If you have any questions about your child's cafeteria account, please call Aida at (818) 788-4025.

Measure EE - What is it? On June 4, voters living in LAUSD boundaries will cast ballots on Measure EE, Quality Schools for All — a per-square-foot parcel tax on habitable structures. Passing Measure EE is a critical step in our 20 by 20 campaign to reach $20,000 in per-pupil funding by the year 2020. Homeowners would pay 16 cents per square foot on buildings (the taxable square footage listed on property tax bills) located on taxable parcels within Los Angeles Unified boundaries. The tax does not apply to land. Measure EE will not interfere with existing or new rent stabilization ordinances. Measure EE includes exemptions for property owners over 65 and certain disability recipients.
By law, Measure EE funds are dedicated to:
Lowering class sizes
Attracting and retaining high quality teachers and school employees
Providing equitable school nursing, library and counseling services
Providing safe, secure, clean, well-maintained, supportive and welcoming schools
Supporting special needs, homeless, foster, & other underserved and disadvantaged students
