Lanai Weekly: April 8 - 12, 2019

Principal’s Message:

Dear Parents,

This has been an amazing week at Lanai!  Our Spring Concert was filled with lots of jazz!  Everyone was delighted to see the wonderful music performances by our first through fifth graders as well as our chorus and violin clubs.  This year we were treated to the fifth graders playing “Mi Gata Loca” on their recorders. They only received the recorders a few weeks ago and learned to play very quickly.  Our music program has evolved so much this year - our students are learning music theory and note reading; a wide variety of musical genres; artist and music history; vocals, instruments and movement!  We have grown our music opportunities for students through choir, orchestra, violin, guitar and even ukulele! I know as we continue on this expanded path our students will benefit from all the joy and knowledge that music brings!    A huge note of thanks to our wonderful music teachers: Ms. Wichmann, Mr. Carroll and Ms. Mary Ruth Schuler.

Should cursive be taught in schools?  Why or why not? Ellie thinks, “It does not matter.  It just makes it (writing) look really pretty.” Sadie believes that “…cursive should be taught in school because you need to know it at some point in your life when you go to work.”  Lastly, Liam feels that “…cursive should be taught in school because in 4th grade you have to do cursive.”   Many of our third graders are busily engaged in the writing process with an opinion piece on cursive.  They looked at texts that provided the pros and cons of cursive writing. Then they highlighted the proof that supported their opinion.  The students shared with their partners the points highlighted. Later they used a graphic organizer to organize their thoughts before putting their first draft on paper.  I can’t wait to read their published pieces.

If you are a parent of a third, fourth, or fifth grade student, I strongly urge you to go on the Parent Portal and register.  This is the platform parents use to get the CAASPP (CA Assessment of Student Performance and Progress) scores for their children.  The District will not be mailing the results home. The results will only be available on the Parent Portal. This platform will also contain additional testing information about your child.  More information will be posted on Parent Square next week and Jody Chow (Parent Center Director) will be available to help you create an account with your specific credentials.

A final reminder to parents:  Please remind your child that students are NOT ALLOWED to “film/video” any other student.  They are not to use their cell phones during the school day. They may use their phone to contact you after school regarding pick up, but not for other reasons.  Students abusing the cell phone policy will have their phones confiscated.

Wishing you a weekend filled with music and cursive letter or two!

Lisa Elan

UPDATE - Family Volunteering Opportunity! If you have signed up, please check your emails for an update from Food Forward regarding the insufficient crop this year. The event *may* be canceled.   Lanai has reserved a limited number of spots in the annual CSUN Orange Picking Event.  Each year, CSUN teams up with Food Forward for a day of orange picking!  The event is Sunday, April 28 from 9:30 - 11:30 am.  To hold a spot and register as a volunteer (age 5+)  please visit :

Parent Portal Sign-up - What is Parent Portal and why do I need to sign up? The Parent Portal is your one-stop online system that connects parents/guardians to their student’s essential data.  You will be able to view their attendance, assignments and grades and other important information. For families with 3rd to 5th graders, all state testing scores will be posted in your child’s online account as LAUSD has eliminated the mailing of results. To sign up for Parent Portal, visit  Individual PIN numbers were sent home via mail by LAUSD to each legal parent/guardian. You can also contact Jody Chow in the Parent Center at for access to your PIN and child’s student ID number (found on their report card).  Feel free to drop into the Parent Center from 8:30 am to 12:00 pm daily for assistance in enrolling.

Message to all parents regarding phone calls to the office - The office would like to remind parents that they are not a messaging service for the children.  Please make your playdate, pick-up and meet-up arrangements prior to dropping off your children at school and make sure that they are aware of what to do if you are running late. Students in TK - 1st Grade will be sent up to SEEDS and students in 2nd - 5th grade can go to YS/Beyond The Bell to wait for their pick-up.

2nd Grade PE Volunteers Needed - In an effort to help Coach PJ, we have created ONE sign-up sheet for all 2nd grade PE volunteers. Coach PJ realizes this time slot is very tough for some parents, but it is very difficult for him to properly instruct the grade when there aren't volunteers. The hope is to make sure that all 5 slots are filled across the grade, as opposed to each class doing an individual push. If you regularly help with PE, please sign up here!  If you haven't helped with PE but are able to on occasion, please also sign up! Much thanks in advance! LINK:

You can add credit, pay your balance and see your child's cafeteria history online by going to:  You will need your child's school ID (found on their report card or call the school office). Alternately, you can visit the cafeteria in person between the hours of 7:30 am and 2:30 pm to pay by cash.  If you have any questions about your child's cafeteria account, please call Aida at (818) 788-4025.
