Lanai Weekly: April 1 - 5, 2019

Principal’s Message:

Dear Parents,

“She (pronoun) thought (verb) about dessert (prepositional phrase) while (conjunction) enthusiastically (adverb) eating (verb) her (possessive pronoun) scrumptious (adjective) dinner (noun).”  As I visited a fourth-grade class this week, the students were developing their own sentences in groups and then naming the parts of speech. The grammar hasn’t changed, but the interactive way of learning it has!   The sentences were lively, the students enthusiastic, and the learning, stupendous! I know we have some future grammarians!

Kindness counts, and our second graders did some wonderful things for people and animals in our community.  Each child chose how he/she wanted to show kindness to others. They visited shelters, donation centers, police and fire stations, environmental agencies and the like.  Then, they wrote and presented their experience to their classmates in Kindness reports. I visited a classroom and saw some wonderful ways our students helped others. Michelle spoke about donating her toys to children.  “I feel sad to know that other kids don’t have toys to make them happy.” Jordan told about returning a turtle to its habitat. He said, “If something is lost, it’s good to find a home for it. It makes the world a better place.”   Audrina made Cupcakes for Cops! She told her class, “Cops are so brave and help our community.” Sophia visited an animal shelter and mentioned, “I feed the dogs and cats and play with them…They feel lonely, scared and sad because they are not getting too much attention.”  Lastly, Olly spoke of the Therapeutic Living Center that provides services for blind and disabled people. “I told a lot of jokes, read them a question book and then gave the answers...A lot of people ignore blind or disabled people and I wanted to meet them and make them feel special and happy.  I learned that if you be (are) kind, kindness comes back to you.”

On Friday, several of our students participated in the Special Olympics!  They played games, ran races, earned ribbons, ate lunch, and had smiles from ear to ear!  Kudos to all!

And finally, Friday afternoon, many of our students who stay after school and others who were able to come, got to see a delightful puppet show about Nowruz presented by Negar Estakhr and Nargol Rashidian! In addition, Vandan Massahzadeh and Arezoo Kochakan played Persian drums and the accordion to enhance the story. Special thanks to our after school, Persian teacher, Maliheh Barazesh who arranged this performance.

From grammar desserts to athletic challenges to acts of kindness, our students do it all.  With grace, enthusiasm, and reflection, they make our world a better place. “…if you be kind, kindness comes back to you.”

Warmly (adverb),

Lisa Elan (proper noun)

Family Volunteering Opportunity!  Lanai has reserved a limited number of spots in the annual CSUN Orange Picking Event.  Each year, CSUN teams up with Food Forward for a day of orange picking!  If you didn't know this already, there is a large orange grove in the middle of the CSUN campus.  There's thousands of oranges and Food Forward is an organization of volunteers that will go to the location and pick the fruit or veggies to be donated to those who are in need. The event is Sunday, April 28 from 9:30 - 11:30 am.  To hold a spot and register as a volunteer (age 5+)  please visit :

Thank you Lanai Families!  Team Lanai Cares Toiletry Drive was a success!  With your generous donations, we were able to create 100 toiletry kits for the homeless.  Every Monday, a mobile shower truck provides showers at the West Valley Food Pantry. Our toiletry kits will be given to the patrons who access the showers.

Spring Music Concert Update -  Our Spring Music Concerts will be on Wednesday, April 3 and Friday, April 5.  There will be 2 shows on Wednesday (8:45 am and 1:00 pm). The Friday show will be at 8:45 am only. Choir will be featured in the Wednesday 1:00 pm show and the Friday show only. Orchestra will be feature in the Wednesday 1:00 pm show only.  Please note that Kindergarten will not be participating in the Spring Music Concert. Please see Parent Square for the list of approximate stage times.

Message to all parents regarding phone calls to the office - The office would like to remind parents that they are not a messaging service for the children.  Please make your playdate, pick-up and meet-up arrangements prior to dropping off your children at school and make sure that they are aware of what to do if you are running late. Students in TK - 1st Grade will be sent up to SEEDS and students in 2nd - 5th grade can go to YS/Beyond The Bell to wait for their pick-up.

Coach PJ needs help clearing out the textbook bin! Tuesday, April 2 from 8:30 - 10:00 (times flexible).  New textbooks are coming in and we need to box up the old ones to be taken away.  Tape together a box, fill it with books and place it on a pallet outside. That's it!  The more help we have, the faster we can finish. Please wear comfortable clothes and shoes. You can sign up here:

2nd Grade PE Volunteers Needed - In an effort to help Coach PJ, we have created ONE sign-up sheet for all 2nd grade PE volunteers. Coach PJ realizes this time slot is very tough for some parents, but it is very difficult for him to properly instruct the grade when there aren't volunteers. The hope is to make sure that all 5 slots are filled across the grade, as opposed to each class doing an individual push. If you regularly help with PE, please sign up here!  If you haven't helped with PE but are able to on occasion, please also sign up! Much thanks in advance! LINK:

Persian 101 - Make-up classes will be scheduled for Friday, April 5 after school.   Session #1 will start at 2:50 pm and go until 3:30 pm in room 22 (Muffoletto). Session #2 will start at 3:55 and go until 4:45 pm in room 22 (Muffoletto).

You can add credit, pay your balance and see your child's cafeteria history online by going to:  You will need your child's school ID (found on their report card or call the school office). Alternately, you can visit the cafeteria in person between the hours of 7:30 am and 2:30 pm to pay by cash.  If you have any questions about your child's cafeteria account, please call Aida at (818) 788-4025.

Hesby Oaks Elementary and Generosity Feeds - The students of the Hesby Leadership class are working to make the community around us better.  This year, we are working with Generosity Feeds to make 10,000 meals for hungry children in LA on March 30th.

We need help in 2 areas:

1.  Volunteers to help make the meals (stuff backpacks) on March 30th

2.  Hesby has committed $10,000 to cover the cost of supplies and OUR STUDENTS have been reaching out to businesses to partner in this to cover the cost.  The children have raised $7,500 of this already.
