Lanai Weekly: Feb 25 - March 1, 2019

Principal’s Message:

Dear Parents,

This week has been super-cold and we still have a few more weeks of this weather. Please make sure your child(ren) come to school dressed in warm layers and jackets. In the morning, my car’s thermometer registered 36 degrees. Yikes! That’s cold!

Even though it’s cold in the morning, by the time kindergartners were outside with Coach PJ on Wednesday, it was comfortable PE weather and they played a running and tossing game called “Money in the Bank.” The objective was to “guard” the “bank” money, while at the same time, tossing bean bags into a bin and running to catch any that didn’t make it into the container. The kindergartners were running and jumping and tossing and yelling to their partners. In the end, I’m not sure who won, but they all had fun playing and getting good exercise!

In science, our second graders are investigating force and magnetism. They were given magnets, paper clips, string, straws and popsicle sticks to determine which has magnetic properties. They also discovered that a magnet can exert a lot of force on paper clips and lift several at a time in  “clump” or a line. Finally, they explored how magnets attract and repel - all cool stuff!

On Tuesday our fourth graders were busy reading music, singing a Portuguese song and making percussion sounds with their bodies. They counted beats with peanut butter, grapes and tacos and then clapped, slapped, and stomped their feet all in beat. Then they divided into two groups and played different beats and patterns according to the notes they were following. It was a cool sight to see and an awesome sound!

In computers, our 5th graders are developing a PSA (Public Service Announcement) on cyberbullying. Ms. Leon, our Planet Bravo teacher, is having them research their topics, collect data and then overlay information on images. Ms. Leon reminded the students about plagiarism and collecting and citing information obtained from the internet appropriately. The students will then present their project. These projects and curriculum fill their technology toolbox and enable our students to be comfortable and adept in using multiple platforms and applications.

Even though it’s cold outside, Saturday night will be hot! The Gala team has been working ‘round the clock putting together an amazing Havana Night! I hope to see you sporting Panama hats, Cuban cigars, and flouncy dresses as we support the wonderful programs, specialists, and enhancements that are uniquely Lanai.

Let’s Dance!
