Lanai Weekly: February 18 - 22, 2019

Principal’s Message:

Dear Parents,

What do you get when you combine rain, a school bus, Valentine’s Day and second graders?  A great field trip to Placerita Canyon Nature Center! This is a new field trip for our second graders’ and they loved it!  They learned about the life cycle and ecosystem of the area. They saw an owl and reptiles that inhabit the canyon. The students also learned that the first gold sighting was discovered there, which sparked the California Gold Rush.  Unfortunately, the students attending the trip on Thursday couldn’t go on the hike, but it’s a short drive and a wonderful day-trip for the family - make plans to visit!

Do you remember the formula and how to figure out the perimeter and area of a geometric shape?  Ask a third grader! Our third graders were busy this week using measurement, counting length and width units, and using area models and arrays to determine the area and perimeter of different shapes.  They even went beyond by exploring non-standard shapes composed of two different-sized rectangles. The students also were discussing why multiplying a 6” by 4” rectangle is 24 either way it’s multiplied.  “The reason why is because of the commutative property!” Our students are awesome mathematicians!

Finally in first grade, our students were learning about the contributions of our presidents in reading and writing.  The students were reading expository text to learn how we honor President George Washington and the Washington Monument in Washington D.C.  Next, they wrote how this links to the past, present and future. Big ideas for little folks!

I hope you all have a wonderful three-day weekend as we honor the contributions of our presidents. In the words of John F.  Kennedy, “As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest form of appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them."
