Lanai Weekly: January 29 - February 2, 2018

Principal’s Message:

Dear Parents,

This week Lanai students participated in the Great Kindness Challenge!  The office had a visit by kindergartners who took the Kindness pledge and recited it to the office staff; the campus was especially tidy as many staff members and students helped and picked up trash; upper grades waited patiently as younger students needed time to pass in their lines; kind words and helping each other was the theme throughout the week.  I know our students will continue to show kindness and caring to everyone at school and in our community.

Ask your child about “Magical Science”!  On Thursday and Friday our students experienced this month’s Science Explosion and learned about polymers, magnetism, rainbows, light, and rockets. Have your child show and explain the magic of polymers using a plastic bag, water and pencils.  You also might want to your child about our biggest magnet—the earth.   They learned about the earth’s magnetical field and how it protects us from solar flare radiation.  Students also got to explore magnetism using iron filings.   What happens in a chemical reaction?  Can you propel a rocket using baking soda and vinegar?  What gas does that form?  Your child knows all about it!   And finally, what makes a rainbow?  How does light bend? What phenomena occurs with water and sunlight?   Special thanks to our Magical Science Explosion Moms who researched, planned, prepared and presented the fun and interesting hands-on activities that enrich our students learning!

Finally, a big Kindness thank you to all the parents who have answered the call and helped when it was their week to staff the morning drop-off line.  Please remember, when it is your child’s classroom’s week for staffing the car drop-off line, you must do your part.  There have been many days, since school resumed, that we have not had full classroom participation.  The car valet is for all our students’ safety and to manage the flow of traffic. Each family needs to do their part when it is their turn to volunteer on the drop-off line.

Wishing you a weekend full of Rainbows, Rockets, and Random Acts of Kindness!

Lisa Elan
