Lanai Weekly: September 18 - 22, 2017

Principal’s Message:

What is a “frindle”?  Is it animal, a tasty treat, or the latest toy?   If you asked our third graders, they would tell you that it’s another name for a pen, named by a character in the book, Frindle.  The students are enjoying reading about a spunky boy who renames a pen a “frindle”, and becomes a worldwide success. As I walked through their classrooms many students were using their Chromebooks for vocabulary and research during Language Arts. What do you remember about conservation of energy? What are kinetic and potential energy?  How does the transfer of energy occur?  Again, ask a third grader—they’ll have all the answers as they are learning about energy in science!

Our Safety Committee met on Thursday to review our School Safe Plan which details the policies and procedures our school follows regarding the safety of our students and staff.  The meeting was attended by parents, staff and Officer Mendoza from LAUSD school police.  Some of the items discussed included how to better manage traffic; drivers violating parking and drop-off and pick up rules; and inconsiderate comments/behavior by some parents.  Officer Mendoza provided some suggestions as well as offering this phone number that parents can use to call school police when they feel others are disruptive/abusive or not following parking/traffic rules.  The number is: (213) 625-6631.   We will be having school police and LAPD visit unannounced to provide support.

Finally, please be courteous to our crossing guards.  They work hard every day to keep our students and pedestrians safe.  Please follow their directions.  They are here to protect our most valuable assets—our children.

Enjoy the weekend!
