Lanai Weekly: August 28 - 31, 2017

Principal's Message

Dear Families,

Happy second week of school!  Our students are full speed ahead in their learning and activities!  This week as I visited classrooms, I saw our students engaging in our new math program, Eureka Math.  Ask your child about some of the new vocabulary and activities they participated in, such as math sprints and exit tickets.  In one of our fourth grade classrooms students were working on place value and illustrating the statement of “ten times as many…”  Thus, they were exploring what 10 times 3 hundreds equals, as a precursor to much larger numbers.  In third grade, students were demonstrating four different ways to show 2 groups of 5—arrays, addition, division, and multiplication.  Our first graders were busy figuring out part/part/whole as they decomposed numbers.  As I spoke with many of our students and teachers they all said how much they love the new challenges in math and already see improvement in speed, through the sprints!

Also parents, please drive safely and follow all posted parking rules, traffic signs and drop-off and pick-up procedures.  I know you have important places to go, but our children’s safety should always be first on your car-radar.  LAPD and school police will be showing up unannounced.  Our students depend on their parents for modeling the appropriate way to respect others, driving courtesy, and how as a society we follow the rules— whether the rules be on the playground or while driving and parking our cars.

Have a wonderful weekend and I’ll see you at Back to School Night!

Lisa Elan

Safety Alert Regarding Reusing Water Bottles -  While keeping hydrated is essential for good health, the reuse of disposable water bottles can be an unhealthy practice. Most single use bottles are very difficult to clean and studies have shown that bacteria levels increase the longer these bottles are used. The full safety bulletin has been attached.
