Lanai Weekly: March 20 - 24, 2017

Principal’s Message

Dear Families,

Wow!  I’m still reeling from Lanai’s awesome GALA!   A very big shout-out to the Gala chairs and their committees in working so hard to make this Gala, “Vegas” worthy!  And an additional super, thank you to all our families who so generously support Lanai by maintaining our enrichment/arts/technology programs and demonstrating how important our teachers and T.A.’s are to the success of our school!

Even though this was week was a “quiet” week at Lanai because of the shorter days due to Parent/Teacher conferences, our second graders were very busy using technology in many facets of their learning.  In the computer lab they were “dropping” clip art into their own  Powerpoint presentations.   Others were using Chromebooks to research the contributions of many African-Americans in science, arts, technology and agriculture.  Another class was reading their Scholastic News magazine and then played a comprehension game based on the nonfiction article they had just read.   In addition, each week second graders are accessing LEXIA, Accelerated Reader, and ABC-YA for math and reading skill support.

Students in grades 3-5 will be taking the SBAC (Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium) tests soon.  It is a computer adaptive assessment and is a tool by which teachers and parents can determine college and career readiness based on student performance levels.  The testing date windows are:  Third grade - April 24 to May 5th; Fourth grade - May 8th to May 19th; Fifth grade—May 17th to June 2nd.  Students will be actually testing about 4 days in one to two hour sessions.  An informational meeting for parents about the SBAC testing will be announced soon.

Finally, our students celebrated Nowruz—Persian New Year on Thursday!  Students learned about the special table set with the New Year symbols - eggs, flowers, nuts, and apples and sampled delicious Persian cookies during recess. The celebration ended with our students dancing in their traditional dress and then extended to a school-wide dance party!  Wishing all our Persian families a Happy New Year!
