This week our fifth graders stepped back in time as they experienced life as it was during Colonial times. Two docents came to Lanai dressed in their colonial best and shared about life in that time period as well as letting the students make crafts and participate with the tools used in their day. The students stamped, printed, made garlands and other activities that were crucial to colonists’ daily life. It’s surprising that life in the 1600’s was possible without the technology we use today!
Fast forward to the 21 century, next weekend, Saturday, March 4th there are two very exciting events in which Lanai students are participating. The first event is Steam Fest at Cleveland High from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Steam Fest is an acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math literacy which is the current focus in preparing our students for 21st century learning. Lanai is highlighting our attention to arts and wellness through chorus and yoga. Our Chorus will be performing at 10:35 a.m. Some of our Kindergartners and other grade students will be presenting a Yoga demonstration at 10:50 a.m. Both will be located in the “Thriving in Our World” stage. Either before or after the performances, stop by the Lanai booth in the Hall of Quality Education. You will also want to stroll through the other booths and “lands” to learn about all the exciting opportunities offered to students in our Northwest District of LAUSD. Certainly, you’ll want to visit the Portola, Millikan, and Hesby middle schools as well as Taft High during your visit to Steam Fest.
The other exciting event that is going on March 4th, student teams from Lanai are participating in the Destination Imagination competition. The teams have dedicated months of preparation in order to participate in challenges through research, cooperation, presentation and creativity! We wish them good luck and can’t wait to hear about their exciting, fun and challenging day!
Finally, we are wishing our Parent Center Community Representative, Lisa Reeve, much luck in her new position working at the UCLA Film School. She will certainly be missed, but we know once a Lanai Lion, always a Lanai Lion and is always welcome to visit our pride! We are fortunate to welcome Jody Chow, who will be our new Parent Center Representative, and know that the transition will be smooth and look forward to the talents, creativity, and organization that she possess.
