Lanai Weekly: February 6- February 10, 2017

Lanai Weekly February 6-February 10, 2017

Principal’s Message

There were lots of great things going on at Lanai this week!  We started off Monday with pomegranates for our Harvest of the Month fruit—yummy, sweet, crunchy, and tart!  Tuesday was full of fun, playing games and eating snacks with our grandparents on Grandparents Game Day!  Thursday our second graders participated in: Kids World Drama Production organized by our neighborhood Portola Middle School!  About 50 students from Portola presented folktales from 5 continents and used all our second graders in the retelling of the stories!  Our second graders were dressed as African animals, bunnies, trolls, and other characters as they performed with the Portola students.  As a treat, it was great to see some of Lanai’s former students as actors and cast leaders in this production!  In addition, Friday was our Principal Awards Assembly and Lunch with the Principal—three cheers for our award students!

This week I spent some time in our “very dynamic” Transitional Kindergarten and Kindergarten and I saw our students actively engaged in yoga (their tree poses were amazing); writing at least two sentences in journals with attention to adjectives; using technology and talking about animals they studied using verbs (one boy announced that an octopus shoots ink); a class finding all the rainbow words in the “Little Boy Blue” nursery rhyme; and reading group centers where children were reading to each other, the teacher, and the aide, in addition to using computers for reading games.   Our kinders rock their literacy!

Finally, our School Site Council, Safety Committee and Staff have spent time discussing ways to keep our students safe with cell phones.    As a reminder, if your child has a cell phone, it is to be silent, kept in his/her backpack, and only used with permission from the teacher.  Smart watches may be worn, but only used with teacher knowledge and certainly follows the same rules as a cell phone.  Lastly, if your child stays after school in Youth Services, similar rules apply to cell phone usage.  If your child needs to use his/her phone for homework or to call home, it is to be used by the benches near the ball box.  Students are not to be hovering around each other playing games, watching videos or taking photos.  Your child is encouraged to talk to Coach Wendy for any after-school, Y.S. questions.

I am looking forward to seeing our many talented students perform in our annual Talent Show on Saturday.  I hope to see you there!
