Lanai Weekly: February 20-February 24, 2017

Principal’s Message

Dear Families,

Lanai showed lots of love this week with Valentine’s Day fun; our Character assembly with “Caring” as the theme; and collecting books for other schools as well as stuffed animals for needy families.  This week we also had a lot of changing weather going on—from sunny days to rain and a 20 degree temperature change.  We do have “quasi-extreme” weather in Los Angeles.  It is an interesting parallel to what our 5th graders have been studying in Science—Weather and Climate.  They have been learning about tornados, thunder and lightning storms, floods, snow, etc. (much of the weather we don’t have) and how the ocean plays a role in our winds and weather patterns.  After looking through their science journals, it’s evident to see how much they know about our weather.  I believe we may have a few, future meteorologists from Lanai!

This school year is really flying fast and soon your child will be bringing home his/her second report card.  Parent/Teacher conference week is March 13th -17th.  Conferences are necessary for all parents of students needing extra support.  Your child’s teacher will soon be sending home a sign-up for parents requesting a conference.

Please add Saturday, March 4th to your calendar if you’d like to visit Steamfest at Cleveland High.  Most schools in our Northwest district will be there; displaying  the unique opportunities available at each school.  Lanai will have a booth in the Hall of Quality Education as well as a performance by our Choir and a yoga demonstration.  In addition, it’s a great way to see what our nearby middle schools (Portola, Hesby, and Millikan) and high schools (Taft & Birmingham) have to offer.

Presidents’ Day is Monday and school is closed.  I hope you and your family have a wonderful three-day weekend.

Lisa Elan
