Lanai Weekly: October 23 - 27, 2017

Principal’s Message:

Spooktacular, Harvest of the Month, Diwali, California Shakeout—what a week! Lanai’s community was out in full force with the best Spooktacular yet! Our students and families were treated to a marvelous day filled with awesome rides, great games, yummy food, terrific prizes and a Spooky atmosphere! This incredible day is the result of so many dedicated parents who worked countless hours for our students to have the Best. Spook. Ever! On Monday, yummy figs were the order of the day as our Harvest of the Month volunteers offered fig bites for our students to sample. On Wednesday, we celebrated Diwali—Indian Festival of Lights. It was lovely to see our students dancing to Indian music and then the whole school joining in! Recess was delicious with tastes of candies and chocolate coins. Additionally, our students loved coloring symbols, getting hand tattoos and jeweled bindis! On Thursday, our entire school participated in the California Shakeout. We (along with all LAUSD schools) simulated our response to a major 7.2 earthquake. All buildings were evacuated, triage was set up and missing students/staff were found. Parents participated in the drill as well and “picked-up” their children at the Request and Reunion gates. At the conclusion of the drill the entire school applauded each other for such a dedicated response to the simulation.

Flu season is ramping up and many of our students have left school early because they became ill. We request that if your child is running a fever during the night and the fever breaks by morning, the child still needs to remain home. The rule of thumb is: Fever-free for 24 hours without the help of fever-reducers.

Finally parents, our teachers are happy to talk to you about how your child is doing. They only ask that you please send them an email so that they can arrange an appointment. They are super busy (new math program, new reading program, new report card and “normal” Lanai full-days) which limit the quick, just a minute at morning drop-off or afternoon pick-up conferences. Mostly, our teachers will respond to you within 24 hours (add additional time over the weekend).

Fall is flying—shorter days, filled with Lanai awesomeness… Best. School. Ever.
