Lanai Weekly: November 7, 2016

Principal’s Message

Dear Parents,

Lanai has been leaping with so many exciting things this week!  Our Halloween parade started off Monday with a dinosaur, storm troopers, and princesses, oh my! I did see Dorothy and Toto, but Lanai is certainly not Kansas!

On Tuesday, our third through fifth graders attended an awesome Anti-Bullying assembly.  They were taught to use the strategy of Stop, Breathe, and Choose before reacting to a situation.  Ask your third through fifth grade child to explain the approach to you.  In addition on Tuesday, you might have seen or heard about the police and patrol cars on the school yard, no need to worry, there wasn’t any shenanigans going on-- it was our first graders meeting some very important community helpers!

On Wednesday we celebrated DIWALI which is the Indian New Year.  Our students were treated to a fun dance performance by our own students and then the whole school danced together!  During recess, students were given Indian candies (yummy), tattoos, coloring pages and a bindi if they desired.  You might have noticed many of our staff sporting tattoos and bindis in honor of DIWALI too!  Thank you to all our parents who planned this great event!

As if that wasn’t enough, some of our students participated in the Special Olympics on Wednesday at Columbus Middle School and took first place in soccer!  They came back to school very proud with their blue ribbons.  It just goes to show the strength of our Lanai Lions!

Finally, on Friday night we had a lot of happy children and some “Angry Birds” during our family movie night!   A movie, friends, licorice, popcorn and P.J.’s—is there any better way to end a week?

Remember this weekend is “Fall-back”.   We gain an extra hour of sleep!  Yes!

HOPE GARDENS HOLIDAY DESSERT SOCIAL  - Community Volunteer Project, Saturday, December 3, 2:00pm to 4:30pm

Team Lanai Cares will be hosting our first off-site event benefiting the families of Hope Gardens, a transitional living facility for women, children and seniors serving 68 families in Sylmar. We will be sharing a dessert pot-luck, making arts and crafts and watching a bell choir performance together!  Due to limited space at the shelter, we must limit the number of families who want to attend the event in person. Minimum age to volunteer is 6. However, all Lanai families are invited to participate by providing a dessert or even sponsoring a family by giving a $10 gift card. This is a wonderful opportunity for our children to share the holiday spirit with those less fortunate while learning generosity, empathy and gratitude, the cornerstones of Team Lanai Cares. Please note there is a date and time conflict with musical theatre performances.Hope Gardens is affiliated with the Union Rescue Mission.
