Lanai Weekly: September 16 - 20, 2019

Principal’s Message:

Dear Team Lanai!

I have already learned so much about our school culture just by interacting and observing our students, having conversations with our parents and guardians and participating in collaborative meetings with our teachers. We value “Educating the Whole Child”, which means that in order for our students to reach their full potential academically, our students must feel safe, secure, and happy when at school. At last Monday’s morning assembly, I assigned a homework assignment to all our students. I expected them to perform at least 10 acts of kindness each day. Please help them with this assignment by modeling these expected behaviors everyday. When your child comes home this Monday, ask your child about their new assignment for this upcoming week.

Thank you to all the parents who found the time to attend Back to School Night. As I was able to visit most classrooms, it was great to see all of you engaged with the teacher’s presentation. I would also like to thank all our parents who volunteer their time at our school. Your involvement with our school sends a positive message to your child the value of education and the importance of a collaborative community. For this week, I look forward to seeing you Thursday for our CPK fundraiser and Friday for our Guys and Kids Sports Night. These are other opportunities to show your support for Lanai and develop meaningful connections between school and home.

5th GRADE PARENTS - The office has received an inordinate amount of calls to relay personal messages to the students in the classrooms. Not only is this disruptive to the classroom, but teachers lose valuable teaching time and students lose learning time. Please make your pick-up/playdate/lunch arrangements before the school day starts and make sure your child knows before being dropped off at school. Alternately, if your child has a cell-phone, you can leave them a message or a text and ask them to check their phones at the end of the school day. All messages received during school hours will not be relayed into the classroom until after the school day has ended.

PARENT PORTAL SIGN-UP - WHAT IS PARENT PORTAL AND WHY DO I NEED TO SIGN UP? The Parent Portal is your one-stop online system that connects parents/guardians to their student’s essential data. You will be able to view their attendance, assignments and grades and other important information. For families with 3rd to 5th graders, all state testing scores will be posted in your child’s online account as LAUSD has eliminated the mailing of results. To sign up for Parent Portal, visit Individual PIN numbers were sent home via mail by LAUSD to each legal parent/guardian. You can also contact Jody Chow in the Parent Center at for access to your PIN and child’s student ID number (found on their report card). Feel free to drop into the Parent Center from 8:30 am to 12:00 pm daily for assistance in enrolling.

DOCTOR’S NOTES: Important: If your child has crutches/cast/stitches/staples, please make sure that your child hands in a doctor’s note to Jane (Health Aid) in the office!

GUYS AND KIDS SPORTS NIGHT - Calling all fathers, father figures, grandfathers and uncles! Come join your kids for fun games, sports and popsicles with Coach Kho on the upper yard on Friday, September 20th from 5:30 - 7:00 PM. HARVEST OF THE MONTH - Our first HOTM sampling will take place on Thursday, September 26 at recess. Blackberry is a delicious and versatile fruit, belonging to the Rosaceae family which also includes raspberry and dewberry. History reveals that blackberries were used by the Romans and Greeks for healing numerous health conditions. Blackberries offer a ton of nutrition benefits, including antioxidants and a variety of vitamins. We are excited to start the year off with this delicious berry for our first Harvest of the Month

  • Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup water

  • 1/3 cup sugar

  • 1 1/2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice

  • 3 or 4 whole allspice

  • 3 cups fresh or frozen blackberries (1 1/2 pints)

Bring water, sugar, juice, and allspice to a boil in a small saucepan over moderate heat, stirring until sugar is dissolved. Boil until reduced to about 1/4 cup. Cool syrup to lukewarm and discard allspice. Purée 2 cups blackberries with all of syrup in a blender. Force purée through a fine sieve into a bowl to remove seeds.
