Dear Lanai Community,
It has been my great pleasure to work with such an amazing community. The teaching staff is wonderful. The rest of the staff from office, custodial, teachers’ assistants, librarian, after school programs, and cafeteria go above and beyond. Robbie Soloman, Hahn Le, Jody Chow and Alisa Lippman have made my job so enjoyable. Your children are delightful and a reflection of your parenting.
I know that it is difficult to have an interim that sometimes enforces rules that are different than before but thank you following them. Change can be difficult but your principal selection committee has selected a fabulous principal. I have been a principal at many schools but Lanai is a shining star.

PLAYGROUND EQUIPMENT - Parents, children may NOT play on any yard equipment when there is not a credentialed person on supervision. This is for the child’s safety. Parents may not supervise.
DOCTOR’S NOTES: Important: If your child has crutches/cast/stitches/staples, please make sure that your child hands in a doctor’s note to Jane (Health Aid) in the office! Also, we've received a lot of requests for lip balm in the office. We are happy to provide a swab of petroleum jelly but it would be ideal if kids who dry lips bring in their own lip balm to use.
REMEMBER TO HAND IN THE RED EMERGENCY CONTACT FORMS! Every child must have one on file. Copies were sent home in backpacks the first week or you can fill one in at the office.
SAVE THE DATE! - Back to School Night will be on September 10th for TK to 2nd Grade and on September 11 for 3rd through 5th Grade from 5:30 to 7:00 pm. Book your sitters now!
WHAT IS BACK TO SCHOOL NIGHT?
Back to School Night is a parent or guardian only evening where you get a chance to meet with your child’s homeroom teacher and learn about their expectations and philosophy. You will see their classroom environment and receive schedules and other important paperwork. Classroom doors will open at 6pm. The LoVE Fund table and Spirit Wear sales will also be on site beginning at 5:30 pm (Welcome Time). The upper yard will be open for parking on both days from 5:30 pm onwards.
PARENT PORTAL SIGN-UP - WHAT IS PARENT PORTAL AND WHY DO I NEED TO SIGN UP? The Parent Portal is your one-stop online system that connects parents/guardians to their student’s essential data. You will be able to view their attendance, assignments and grades and other important information. For families with 3rd to 5th graders, all state testing scores will be posted in your child’s online account as LAUSD has eliminated the mailing of results. To sign up for Parent Portal, visit https://achieve.lausd.net/Page/10470. Individual PIN numbers were sent home via mail by LAUSD to each legal parent/guardian. You can also contact Jody Chow in the Parent Center at email@example.com for access to your PIN and child’s student ID number (found on their report card). Feel free to drop into the Parent Center from 8:30 am to 12:00 pm daily for assistance in enrolling. If you had requested your PIN between June 8 - August 20, please be patient as Jody is still responding to all of the inquiries. No need to request again.
ENGLISH LEARNER ADVISORY COMMITTEE (ELAC) members participate in the development, implementation, and evaluation of the local school’s program for LEP students. ELAC also sponsors several Multicultural Events to gain global awareness of our diverse community. If you are interested in joining the committee, please attend the ELAC Orientation on Thursday, August 29th at 1:30 in the Science Lab, Room 28.
SCHOOL SITE COUNCIL COMMITTEE (SSC) - This dynamic group, comprised of parents, teachers and administrators, meets monthly and specifically discusses curriculum and school improvement programs. If you are interested in joining the committee, please attend the SSC Orientation on Thursday, August 29th at 1:30 in the Science Lab, Room 28.

LANAI ROAD AUDITORIUM - We are excited to announce that the Lanai Road auditorium is named the FHSV Forever Friends Auditorium for the 2019/2020 school year! SPIRIT WEAR IS STARTING AN AWESOME NEW VINTAGE SALES LINE, SELLING OLD STYLES FROM YEARS BEFORE!! These shirts are second-hand but are very cool styles from as far as 8-10 years ago! Many shirts will be original and "one of a kind"! Here's where your help comes in.....we're asking families to please donate back old shirts that no longer fit your children for resale! Items can be gently used and must not have holes or stains. Please bring in to the office. We will be selling the 2019-20 designs on Wednesday and Thursday (August 28 and 29th) in front of the office before school starts.

SEEDS ENRICHMENT - Fall Enrichment registration opens Monday August 26th at 9:00 PM. Enrichment Classes begin Monday September 9th! There's basketball, golf, hip hop, art and so much more! Please mark your calendars because classes fill up quickly. Classes are first come first serve. Each class has a grade eligibility, please verify before you enroll (no exceptions). PERSIAN CULTURE 101 CLASSES AT LANAI - Classes begin on Tuesday, September 3 with 2 time slots: 1:50 pm to 2:40 pm and 2:50 pm to 3:40 pm. Sign-ups are first-come, first-serve and there will be a wait list in case the classes are full. This class is for 2nd - 5th graders only and families must fill out the Beyond The Bell application form and submit it to the office prior to the first day of Persian class. MUSICAL THEATER AUDITIONS - Auditions for Lanai’s fall after school musical “Lanai Liberty” will take place on Thursday, August 29th from 2:45 - 5:00 pm in the school auditorium. This is a mandatory attendance for all who want to participate in this fall’s musical. If you have been in past musicals at Lanai, you do not need to audition but you MUST attend the first half hour of meeting to be considered for a spot. If you have never been in a musical with Mr. Jay, please prepare a short song to sing (Happy Birthday is acceptable). Rehearsals are EVERY Thursday after school from 2:45 - 5:00 pm. VOLUNTEER SIGN-UP DAY - Lanai Loves Volunteers! Come to the Volunteer Sign Up Meeting! Join us on Wednesday, August 28th at 8:30am in the auditorium for our first TEAM meeting to hear about all of the amazing volunteer opportunities at Lanai! We will have representatives from all of our committees on hand to answer your questions and find an opportunity that works for you and your schedule. It’s a great way to learn more about Lanai and meet the volunteers who run and staff the programs that make our school so special. Looking forward to seeing you there!

GUYS WALK YOUR KIDS TO SCHOOL DAY - Please have a dad/father figure walk your kids to school on Thursday, August 29 and join our highly successful morning laps program.
