Lanai Weekly: April 29 - May 3, 2019

Principal’s Message:

Dear Parents,

What a week this has been! Earth Day; visitors from the Revolutionary War, and Teacher of the Year! So many creative entries (as always) by our students using recycled materials. I saw games, dog and doll houses, a homework producer, and even an igloo that could provide protection during a snowstorm! Each student explained the project, materials selected, and use for their item. Second graders had quite a diverse set of creations: Ronel constructed a Laser Tag Park using old moldings, plastic food containers and extra LED lights; Liam took us to a beach in Hawaii complete with tongue depressor trees, water bottles and a peanut butter lid that provided a shaded area; and Blair’s twin, LOL Surprise, stood watch while students perused the exhibit! There were lots of other Earth Day events going on as well! Kindergarten had their students participate in a center day with visits to each classroom for a made flowers out of tissue paper, made tie-dyed Earths different activity. In one class, they made necklaces, another wrote a flip book, made flowers out of tissue paper, made tie-dyed Earths, and read stories about what we can do to protect our Earth. The week ended with the office serenaded by a Kindergarten class singing, The Earth is Our Planet! Yeah!!

Our fifth grade continues to have visitors from the past with Heroes from the Revolutionary War! Benjamin Franklin, Frances Marion, James Otis, Benedict Arnold (traitor), Abigail Adams, and many others. The students put so much effort and research into their reports that their presentations are truly amazing! Every year the bar is raised - the videos - super adorable; costumes - thank you Amazon; and the live presentations - so much fun! Truly a highlight in fifth grade!

Finally, Lanai presented our Teacher of the Year, Mrs. Erika Altman, at the 25th Annual Teacher of the Year event at the Woodland Hills Hilton on Thursday night! Mrs. Altman was honored along with 19 other teachers throughout the valley for their dedication to their students and education. This is Mrs. Altman’s Sweet-Sixteen year as a teacher! Mrs. Altman is National Board Certified and presents Professional Development to our teachers in writing and Steam education. In addition, she is loved by her students and well-respected by her colleagues. If you walk into her classroom, (as well as all our other Kinder classrooms) you might think you’re in first grade because the level of instruction and student work far exceeds kindergarten standards! Lanai is truly lucky to have Mrs. Altman here, as well as all our other exceptional teachers.

Warmly,

Lisa Elan

Parent Portal Sign-up - What is Parent Portal and why do I need to sign up? The Parent Portal is your one-stop online system that connects parents/guardians to their student’s essential data.  You will be able to view their attendance, assignments and grades and other important information. For families with 3rd to 5th graders, all state testing scores will be posted in your child’s online account as LAUSD has eliminated the mailing of results. To sign up for Parent Portal, visit https://achieve.lausd.net/Page/10470.  Individual PIN numbers were sent home via mail by LAUSD to each legal parent/guardian. You can also contact Jody Chow in the Parent Center at jody.chow@lanairoad.net for access to your PIN and child’s student ID number (found on their report card).  Feel free to drop into the Parent Center from 8:30 am to 12:00 pm daily for assistance in enrolling.
