Lanai Weekly: April 22 - 26, 2019

Principal’s Message:

Dear Parents,

If you happened upon the campus, Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday, you probably noticed that it was quieter than usual.  That’s because most of the 4th graders were on their three-day field trip to the Ocean Institute! They learned about the ocean ecosystem; dissected a fish and saw its heart, stomach and liver; went on awesome hikes; caught frogs and a newt in a creek; performed skits by the campfire; played Uno; hung out with friends; and even ate Subway for lunch!  Back at school, Thursday, was pajama day for the 4th graders and they had so many interesting stories to share.  I know their trip to the Ocean Institute will be a fond memory, always!

There was still much going on at school with our Kindergartners sharing their daily, morning calendar.  On the 143rd day of school they demonstrated that they can run the class on their own.  Mikail led the class in patterns, numbers, and place value as part of the morning routine.  Dylan reported that the weather was sunny but cool. Later, the students found ways to name the number 9.  Ella suggested 11-2; Cyrus mentioned 4 x 2 +1; Kayla said 4 ½ + 4 ½; Nicole told us 1 x 9; Gavin replied 2 + 2 +2 + 2 + 1; and Kiana stated 3 +3 + 3 is a way to make nine!  Our kindergartners have incredible number sense!

Do you know the difference between Declarative and Explanatory sentences?  Just ask a first grader to tell you. They also discussed the elements of a “good” sentence.  One example I saw was, “Timur can’t wait!” The students added detail by enhancing the sentence to: “Our sweet student Timur, can’t wait for summer break!”  Me too!

Wishing you a wonderful Spring Holiday filled with sweetness!

If you have any questions, please contact Julie Weinstein, julieweinstein12@gmail.com.

FROM THE SCHOOL OFFICE:

Parent Portal Sign-up - What is Parent Portal and why do I need to sign up? The Parent Portal is your one-stop online system that connects parents/guardians to their student’s essential data.  You will be able to view their attendance, assignments and grades and other important information. For families with 3rd to 5th graders, all state testing scores will be posted in your child’s online account as LAUSD has eliminated the mailing of results. To sign up for Parent Portal, visit https://achieve.lausd.net/Page/10470.  Individual PIN numbers were sent home via mail by LAUSD to each legal parent/guardian. You can also contact Jody Chow in the Parent Center at jody.chow@lanairoad.net for access to your PIN and child’s student ID number (found on their report card).  Feel free to drop into the Parent Center from 8:30 am to 12:00 pm daily for assistance in enrolling.

Message to all parents regarding phone calls to the office - The office would like to remind parents that they are not a messaging service for the children.  Please make your playdate, pick-up and meet-up arrangements prior to dropping off your children at school and make sure that they are aware of what to do if you are running late. Students in TK - 1st Grade will be sent up to SEEDS and students in 2nd - 5th grade can go to YS/Beyond The Bell to wait for their pick-up.

VOLUNTEERS

Calling All Volunteers! - If you donated your time and energy to support our school this year in any capacity, we want to honor you!  Please come to our Volunteer Breakfast on Wednesday, May 1 from 8:30 to 10:00 am in the auditorium. You can RSVP to jody.chow@lanairoad.net or leave a comment below.  Flyer is attached.

CANCELED - Family Volunteering Opportunity! Due to the lack of ripe oranges this spring, the annual CSUN Orange Picking Event has been canceled.   For addition volunteer opportunities with Food Forward, please view the Volunteer calendar at: https://foodforward.org/volunteer/sign-up-to-volunteer/

2nd Grade PE Volunteers Needed - In an effort to help Coach PJ, we have created ONE sign-up sheet for all 2nd grade PE volunteers. Coach PJ realizes this time slot is very tough for some parents, but it is very difficult for him to properly instruct the grade when there aren't volunteers. The hope is to make sure that all 5 slots are filled across the grade, as opposed to each class doing an individual push. If you regularly help with PE, please sign up here!  If you haven't helped with PE but are able to on occasion, please also sign up! Much thanks in advance!
