What is faster than a hop, skip and a jump through an obstacle course? More powerful than vivid adjectives? Able to leap tall buildings using onomatopoeia words? Our Superhero Literacy Fair of course! On Thursday and Friday this week our students visited the library for our annual Literacy Fair. The students attended different stations as they explored many facets of literacy. Before embarking on their journey through superhero adventures, the younger students heard snippets from a book by Kamala Harris called Superheroes are Everywhere. All classes were introduced to the superhero inside us. Those values include how kindness, sharing, helpfulness, courage, fairness and curiosity are within us. Then they visited stations as they explored a variety of literacy games, writings and crafts. At one station, they spun a story-starter wheel and used the selection to write a story. At another station, the students practiced the physical skills necessary to be a superhero. They hopped, jumped, crawled, side-stepped and high-fived as they ran through an onomatopoeia workout course—Kapow!!! Our students also became superheroes themselves! They listed their super powers, gave themselves a superhero name, defined how they’d help others and decorated their own superhero masks. Finally, our students explored an the respiratory system, an underwater world, and a dairy farm through VR glasses. A superhero thank-you to Juliet Biederman and Rachael Barg and their superhero-volunteer parents who put on the “super-est” Literacy Fair yet!
Also, as a reminder, this weekend begins daylight savings time. Clocks are moved ahead an hour at 2:00 am on Sunday. That means less sleep, but more daylight for Lanai’s student-superheroes and their amazing powers!

Harvest of the Month - Cauliflower! Cauliflower is a member of the cruciferous vegetables family, along with broccoli, cabbage, kale and brussels sprouts. Cauliflower is often considered one of the healthiest foods on Earth because of its ability to ward off cancer, heart disease, brain disease and even weight gain. Toiletry Drive - Team Lanai Cares is collecting new, travel sized toiletries with a goal of creating 100 toiletry kits for the patrons of the West Valley Food Pantry. We will be collecting from March 1 to 21 and assembling the packages on Friday, March 22 on campus. Items can be dropped off in the collection bin outside the office or in the Parent Center. OLSAT8 - Parent Presentation - given by 1st Grade Teacher and GATE coordinator, Brittany Motodani and Robbie Solomon, Community Representative. Thursday, March 14 at 8:30 in the Parent Center. The OLSAT-8 (Otis-Lennon School Ability Test, Eighth Edition) is a nationally standardized, test of verbal and non-verbal school abilities given to all second grade students to seek out and identify gifted and talented students from varying linguistic, economic and cultural backgrounds.
Understanding the US Educational System - Wednesday, March 27 at 8:30 am. Were you educated outside of the United States? Are you confused about how the U.S. school system works and how to best support your student? Join Robbie Solomon for an information session and discussion to help enlighten you on the American school system structure. We will discuss public and private primary, secondary and university paths. We will also discuss standardized testing and the impact of honors/Advanced Placement classes in applying to university.

Persian 101 - Make-up classes will be scheduled for Friday, March 29 and Friday, April 5 after school. Session #1 will start at 2:50 pm and go until 3:40 pm in the Parent Center. Session #2 will start at 3:55 and go until 4:45 pm in room TBA.
