Lanai Weekly: March 18 - 22, 2019

Principal’s Message:

Dear Parents,

Bragging rights, being kind, and butterflies! This week Lanai (as always) had brilliant stuff going on.  First, on Monday, District staff from Beaudry visited our school to see how we implement technology in classrooms. They were impressed with the high level of differentiated activities going on in fifth grade.  During Independent Study Time (IST) the District team saw students working on Zearn for math practice;  Edulastic for assessments; and Power School for resources, homework and study projects. One of the visitors asked Evelyn to show how she uses her Chromebook in Social Studies. She demonstrated how students go to the platform, find the map of the United States, and then complete information on a specific state. Next, the officials visited a third-grade classroom and saw students integrate persuasive and informational writing to produce a video on healthy foods. They watched a yummy strawberry infomercial produced by Mason! The District team was amazed by the innovation, sophistication, and excitement our students and teachers have for using technology. At the end of their tour, they told us that they visit different LAUSD schools each Monday. They raved that Lanai, by far, was one of the best they’ve seen. The ideas and suggestions learned from their visit to Lanai will help them advance and improve technology at our school and throughout the District.

On Wednesday, students were seeing orange for the character trait, fairness. They enjoyed a presentation by our student council with vignettes on ways of showing kindness. One tableau demonstrated thoughtfulness to our teachers by providing food and support during the strike; another, on how important it is to share toys with siblings and friends; and lastly, what it means to be responsible in caring for pets and keeping your word. Our students love seeing their peers perform. A special thanks to Ali for working with our students and helping them write and bring their ideas to life!

Did you know that Lanai is part of the flight pattern for “painted lady” butterflies? Several days this week students witnessed countless butterflies flying swiftly across the playground and parking lot. These butterflies are on the first leg in their migration from Mexico to the Pacific Northwest. The insects seen will journey to Northern California, breed, and then the next generation of butterflies will continue their trek to the Pacific Northwest. This is happening because of the tremendous amount of rain experienced this winter. How lucky we are to witness this lovely, unusual occurrence of so many painted ladies at one time!

PTA NEWS

Toiletry Drive - Team Lanai Cares is collecting new, travel sized toiletries with a goal of creating 100 toiletry kits for the patrons of the West Valley Food Pantry.  We will be collecting from March 1 to 21 and assembling the packages on Friday, March 22 on campus.  Items can be dropped off in the collection bin outside the office or in the Parent Center.  Check this link for the donation and assembly party sign-ups: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c044ca5af2ca4fe3-lanai

SAVE THE DATE!  Our Spring Music Concerts will be on Wednesday, April 3 and Friday, April 5.  There will be 2 shows on Wednesday (8:45 am and 1:30 pm). The Friday show will be at 8:45 am only.

FROM THE SCHOOL OFFICE:

Message to all parents regarding phone calls to the office - The office would like to remind parents that they are not a messaging service for the children.  Please make your playdate, pick-up and meet-up arrangements prior to dropping off your children at school and make sure that they are aware of what to do if you are running late. Students in TK - 1st Grade will be sent up to SEEDS and students in 2nd - 5th grade can go to YS/Beyond The Bell to wait for their pick-up.

Understanding the US Educational System - Wednesday, March 27 at 8:30 am. Were you educated outside of the United States?  Are you confused about how the U.S. school system works and how to best support your student? Join Robbie Solomon for an information session and discussion to help enlighten you on the American school system structure.  We will discuss public and private primary, secondary and university paths. We will also discuss standardized testing and the impact of honors/Advanced Placement classes in applying to university.

AFTER SCHOOL ENRICHMENT

Persian 101 - Make-up classes will be scheduled for Friday, March 29 and Friday, April 5 after school. Session #1 will start at 2:50 pm and go until 3:40 pm in the Parent Center. Session #2 will start at 3:55 and go until 4:45 pm in room TBC.

College Palooza - A gathering of college and career experts, educators, families and community partners. Over 20 workshops such as financial aid, college admissions and career pathways. Meet college and community representatives and learn about community resources.  Childcare provided for LA Unified students in TK-5th Grade. March 16 from 8am - 2pm at LA Trade Tech College, 400 W. DCFS is actively recruiting potential foster and adoptive parents: there simply aren't enough to fill the need. Join us for an information event to jump start your path to becoming a foster or adoptive parent. This is a community effort designed to make the process of becoming a foster or adoptive parent easier and more inclusive for all families.
