Lanai Weekly: February 11 - 15, 2019
/Principal’s Message:
Dear Parents,
February is the month for love and kindness and we certainly had good vibes this week! On Wednesday, we celebrated the Lunar New Year with a lion dance, music, martial arts demonstration, oodles of noodles and fortune cookies! Ask you child what countries celebrate the Lunar New Year (China, Vietnam and Korea) and what animal year this is. Hint: Usually pink, known as a character named “Wilbur” and says “Oink!”
On Thursday, musicians from the Los Angeles Jazz Society performed for our students. The five-member band introduced instruments, sounds, and varieties of jazz music. They heard “boogie-woogie,” blues, and even the Charlie Brown theme! Top it off with some of our students playing the drums and other percussion instruments and we had the whole auditorium rocking in their seats!
In addition, this week we had the Pacer organization provide a parent workshop on “Creating a World Without Bullying.” We are using the support of this organization to help us change the lens on bullying. Our PSW, Johanna Johnston, is working with students (as well as our teachers and staff) to create a world filled with “intentional kindness, acceptance and inclusion.” Ms. Johanna provided professional development to our teachers and also presented an evening parent/child workshop. This issue is a focus at our school. Our Positive Behavior and Safety Committee and Local School Leadership Committee are working together with teachers and staff to articulate our school-wide message and plan. This is in conjunction with the policies and procedures put forth by LAUSD. Please look to the upcoming Lanai Leader for more information.
Finally, Lanai’s Got Talent—and you should see it! Please come tomorrow, Saturday, February 9th at 11:00 a.m. and/or 3:00 p.m. to see our students perform skits, songs, dances, music and more! Special thanks to our parent volunteers who worked so hard to see this through.
With Kindness,
Lisa Elan
