Principal’s Message

Dear Parents,

Daily routines are important for everyone.  Most adults say that they are far more efficient at managing their time, errands, responsibilities, etc. while they are working as opposed to when on vacation.  Children also thrive if they have a consistent, daily routine. Make sure your child has a predictable after-school schedule: pickup, snack, play, homework, dinner, bath/shower, book and bed.  During homework time make sure your child has a quiet spot to work, away from TV and other media so he/she can concentrate. Younger children often like to do their homework near parents, for help.  That’s fine. Offer some support if needed; but also allow your child to do the work. If the homework is too difficult, please don’t “fight” with your child to complete it. Instead, let his/her teacher know the challenges your child experienced.  That feedback is important to the teacher.    Have your child prepare his/her backpack the night before so mornings are less hectic.  For younger children, parents still need to check that your child has everything he/she needs.  If your child forgets to bring his/her homework to school, you don’t need to run to school and turn it in.  It’s okay for your child to let the teacher know he/she forgot it. We all forget things sometimes. The learning is, your child will develop strategies (with your support) to help remember, and the confidence to tell the teacher what happened and that it will be returned the next day.

As for consistency at bedtime, children in kinder through second grade should be in bed by 8:00 and asleep by 8:30.  Third through fifth grade should be in bed no later than 9:00. They have super busy days at school and their little bodies and curious minds need at least 10 hours of sleep to grow and refresh.  Reading a book before bed is a great way to prepare them for sleep. Studies have shown that using electronic devices before bed, inhibit and delay restful sleep. It’s a good idea to remove devices from your child’s room before bedtime.  The key is predictability - if the family’s afternoon and evening activities are consistent, your child will fall into that routine with less conflict.

A few car reminders:  If you park in a handicapped space for after-school pick up, please know that you will not be able to move your car until about 3:00 p.m.  Until that time, we have far too many children and parents crossing the parking lot and it’s dangerous. Also, please remember that a U-turn on Lanai is prohibited; thus, no U-turns when leaving the few spaces in front of the school.

FROM THE SCHOOL OFFICE:

Please remember  Lanai’s Traffic Code: PAWS (Park and Walk Safely)

  • Obey all traffic signs (including the no left and no U-turn signs in front of the school)

  • Do not double park or park in red zones

  • Do not block driveways or move trash/recycling cans

  • THERE IS ABSOLUTELY, POSITIVELY NO PARKING ON MARBRO UNLESS YOU HAVE A SPECIAL PERMIT (this includes just “pulling over to drop off children”)

For Those Using The Drop Off Line:

  • Put your car in park

  • Kids must exit from the passenger side

  • School bags should be in the vehicle with the child and not in the trunk.

  • Do not exit the vehicle while in the drop off lane

  • NO DOGS!  NO DOGS! NO DOGS! NO DOGS!

  • NO CELLPHONE USE IN THE LINE (that includes texting while driving through)


From the School Office

  • Have you moved out of the Lanai Road school boundaries (temporarily or permanently)?  If so, please contact the Main Office and with your new temporary or permanent address ASAP.  LAUSD policy requires parents to notify the school within 30 days of moving out of the school’s boundaries.  Lanai strives to keep students enrolled at the school, however, failure to report a change of address may result in forfeiting a Continuing Enrollment permit.

  • Any student with stitches, staples, casts, crutches, etc must visit the school nurse as soon as they return to school.  A doctor’s note is required in order to return to the classroom.


        PARENT PRESENTATIONS AND EVENTS

Coffee with the Principal/All Parents Team Meeting - Monday, September 17 at 8:30 am in the Parent Center (Room 3). This meeting is for any Lanai parent or guardian who wants to stay updated on the issues on and around campus. Representatives from PTA and FOLB will be on hand to discuss the current agenda and Principal Elan will be there to discuss the latest SBAC scores.  Special guest: Cub Scouts of America. Refreshments will be served.

Coffee Meet and Greet with LAUSD District 4 Board Member, Nick Melvoin - Wednesday, September 26 from 8 - 9am, Auditorium. Mr. Melvoin will discuss the latest LAUSD news and take questions from our parents. Refreshments will be served, no RSVP required.

Navigating LAUSD’s Magnet School Process-Tuesday, September 25  8:30 -9:30

This event is for parents only. We will discuss the magnet school application process, permits and affiliated charters. Parents should attend this session if you are planning to apply for a school through eChoices or if you are not yet familiar with the magnet point system. Given by Robbie Solomon, Lanai’s Community Representative.

Meet Chaminade Middle School - Tuesday, October 2 at 7pm in the auditorium.  This event is for parents and students. Principal Mike Valentine and Associate Director of Admissions will be presenting. Prior Lanai students will be available to field questions.

CAMPUS BEAUTIFICATION

  • Help beautification chair address campus needs; communicate with gardener, help institute new projects, weekly garden maintenance (spring kinder families especially)

  • If you have gardening expertise, we need you to get our garden growing!

ART REFLECTIONS  

  • Students participate in this national PTA arts program where they submit works of art based on a set theme and compete for awards at the school level and n national level.

  • Help publicize the contest, collect and assess submissions, judge submissions, set up a gallery at Lanai and ensure that works of art that make it to each round are tracked and submitted properly. Volunteer for several weeks in September-November on your own schedule. Please contact Del at delaram80@hotmail.com for more info.

COMMUNITY EVENTS

Encino's Cub Scout Pack 431 is having an open house on Monday, Sept.17.  All students -- boys and girls -- from grades K-5 are eligible to join. The pack typically has three campouts per year, and enjoys activities such as snow tubing, bike riding, the Raingutter Regatta and Pinewood Derby.  In addition to a monthly pack meeting for receiving awards, there are two den meetings a month.

JDRF One Walk - Sunday, November 4th at 8am - Rose Bowl, Pasadena

JDRF One Walk brings together more than 900,000 people across the country to change the future for everyone living with type 1 diabetes (T1D). This fun, family–friendly event gives people with T1D, their loved ones, companies and the local community the opportunity to come together, create change and positively impact lives of those living with T1D. Does your child like to dance? Taft is inviting students to be a Taft Dance Team member for a day! Kids in K-8 are invited to join Taft’s first annual dance clinic and performance.  The clinic is on Sunday, September 23 from 9am - 1pm and all participants will perform at the varsity football game halftime on Friday, September 28th.  For more information, please see the attached flyer.
