Spring…a time for jump ropes, counting coins, illustrating Earth Day pictures and boat races! Did you know that there is a proper form in handling and turning the rope when jumping? Coach PJ was busy teaching our primary students and they can show you! They also played a fun running game called “Islands” whereby if an island has 3 people on it, the third child has to run to another safe island with only 2 people. It’s a fast and fun game that the students loved! Our first graders are busy counting and learning coins. Even though we don’t use them as often, I know our students will use them wisely! Our second graders were busy illustrating their drawings with our art docents for Earth Day. Fish, land, sea, mountains and sky enveloped in the earth and painted in vibrant watercolors. The art is lovely!
Finally, what can you do with origami boats, rain gutters and fourth graders? Have a Rain Gutter Regatta of course! That’s what many of our fourth graders experienced this week. Each student made an origami boat and then raced it against other classmates down a rain gutter! During the lesson, students talked about the variables including: water variance, the differences in the boat folds, wind force, and gutter placement. Surprisingly, the copy paper we used was fairly water resistant and the boats held up nicely even in repeated contests. Our fourth graders are great mariners and hopefully will come and show-off their boat-making skills at the Taft Explo next Thursday, April 12th from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to attend. In addition to a Rain Gutter Regatta, there will be sports activities, rocket launching, a fashion and art show, drum circles, make-it booths, food trucks and much more! Our chorus will be performing at 6:15 p.m.! Please join us -- wear your Lanai shirts -- have fun -- prizes for all students who attend!
Finally, wishing our Destination Imagination Teams: 3rd grade--DI Diamonds and 5th grade team--DIY’s the best of luck at State in Fresno this weekend!
