Lanai Weekly: March 12 - 16, 2018

Principal’s Message:

Dear Lanai Families,

This has been a wonderful week of outdoor fun, friendship and learning. Early in the week our students got yummy samples of one of my favorite fruits - avocados! All 600 samples were gobbled up before the end of recess—holy guacamole! Speaking of fruit, our first graders were studying a still life inspired by Paul Cezanne through our Art Docent program. They observed apple and pear props and discussed Cezanne’s use of geometric form in sketching their picture. Later, they used color to complete their drawing. Their art work is practically Louvre ready! For health and fitness during P.E. this week, students were busy playing hockey with Coach. Our students enjoyed learning the skills and playing a sport that may be new to them. Our buddies are the best! This week, Ms. Verdin and Mrs. Besser’s classes met in the library to read together. It was a Dr. Seuss celebration with first and fourth graders partner reading Green Eggs and Ham, Cat in the Hat, Are You My Mother, Put Me in the Zoo and many more! Those timeless, fun books are great buddy books to share!

Finally, it’s not too early to start thinking about your summer plans. Ask you child where he/she’d like to go and the answer just might be a camping trip! If so, you can thank our Literacy Fair camp directors! They transformed our library into a campground replete with a tent; a nature realia scavenger hunt; a fishing-word pond; a place to make lanterns; poetry sparks; and story stones! Every student selected the activities that he/she wanted to explore. Finish it all off with a postcard and pretzel and marshmallows for sweet and salty s’mores, and you have the perfect start to a vacation! Get ready! Pack your bags! Let’s go!

Enjoy your weekend,

Lisa Elan

PARENT WORKSHOP: THE “YES” BRAIN: How To Cultivate Courage, Curiosity And Resilience In Your Child - Thursday, March 15 at 8:30 am in the Parent Center. When facing challenges, unpleasant tasks, and contentious issues such as homework, screen time, food choices, and bedtime, children often act out or shut down, responding with reactivity instead of receptivity. But our kids can be taught to approach life with openness and curiosity, even during difficult times. This is what it means to cultivate a “Yes Brain”. Based on the new book by Dr. Dan Siegel and Tina Payne Bryson. Workshop will be given by Johanna Johnston, Lanai’s PSW (Psychiatric Social Work AKA the “Wellness Counselor”). Please RSVP to Refreshments will be provided.

SPECIAL EDUCATION SERVICES/I.E.P FAMILIES - LAUSD Division of Special Education will be holding training sessions for parents with children receiving or have been referred to Special Education Services. There will be 2 sessions: Thursday, March 8 and Thursday, March 15 from 9am - 12pm. Although the flyer indicates that the sessions are for those new to the IEP, we encourage all families to attend.

WHAT’S FOR SNACK AT THE CAFETERIA THIS WEEK? (Coffee cake day is Wednesday, March 21!)

WHAT’S FOR LUNCH AT THE CAFETERIA THIS WEEK? (Everyone’s favorite, the oven fried chicken drumstick is on Tuesday, March 13!)

NEED TO ADD TO YOUR CHILD’S CAFETERIA FUND?   You can do it online here:

MORNING DROP OFF LINE - The morning traffic line occasionally needs extra help. All you do is ask the crossing guard – “Do you need an extra volunteer?”.  This is also an excellent way to transition young kids toward independence by saying goodbye at the gate and then volunteering on the traffic line.   Thanks again for helping to keep our kids safe.

ISRAELI CULTURE DAY - Volunteers Needed for the planning committee. Please email

CINCO DE MAYO  - Volunteers Needed for the planning committee. Please email

LOST AND FOUND - Please contact Shauna Green at if you have a few extra minutes while on campus to help organize or donate items.

TAFT EXPLO-COMPLEX - April 12 from 5 - 8pm, at Taft Charter High School, 5461 Winnetka Ave, Woodland Hills.  A showcase of our community of schools including Lanai Road, Calvert, Encino, Nestle, Wilbur, Serrania and Woodland Hills Elementary.  Middle schools will include Portola, Woodland Hills Academy. High schools will be Taft and Thoreau Continuation School.

SUMMER CAMP FAIR/EXPO EVENT will take place Sunday, April 22 at AC Stelle Middle School in Calabasas. This is a free event where Lanai Road and other San Fernando Valley kids and families can meet representatives from over 50 day camps, overnight camps, art camps, sports camps, acting camps, and every other kind of camp imaginable to ask questions, get brochures and other information, and learn about so many wonderful camp program opportunities for their kids available in L.A. There will also be food, fun, raffles and drawings for free camp sessions, sample activities and demonstrations from participating camps and more.
