Lanai Weekly: February 19 - 23, 2018

Principal's Message:

Dear Parents,

This was red week at school:  Valentine’s Day, Character Assembly, Lunar New Year Celebration, a theater visit from Portola, and our Buddy Lunch!   Lanai students were immersed in caring and sharing with others.  We welcomed the Lunar New Year on Thursday.  Our students were treated to a wonderful assembly that included a Taekwondo demonstration and the exciting lion dance performed with two of our students, Evan and Aiden.  During recess, students made fans, tasted yummy noodle dishes, enjoyed a fortune cookie and were treated to a “red envelope” with a candy coin for good luck!  Ask your child which animal year we ushered in.   We truly appreciate our many families who took part in honoring and presenting the Lunar New Year to our students.

Sharing warm and fun experiences with other children was part of our theme this week. On Thursday, our first graders had a special treat.  Theater students from Portola Middle School came and led our first graders in plays that included our students. There were lions, and tigers and trolls, oh my!  Ask your first grader what animal or character they portrayed in the presentation.  And Friday, was all about our Buddies!  Our students met with their buddies for lunch, play time on the yard, and cookies!!! What can be better than hanging out with our terrific Lanai buds?

On a very serious note, I would like to reaffirm that we practice a safety drill each month:  fire, lockdown, or earthquake.  Our staff is well-prepared and follow our School Safety Plan. Our students practice each month how they need to react in the event of an emergency.  We are mindful of the current climate and are always reviewing and updating procedures.  As always, parents are our partners and are encouraged to participate in our Safety Committee and School Site Council meetings.  And of course, please, if you notice something amiss—let us know!

Finally, I would like to remind all parents that your child’s attendance at school is crucial for student success.  Please plan trips and appointments during non-school time, as each day absent from school is time away from learning—miss a day, miss a lot.
Wishing you a wonderful President’s Day weekend.

Goodbye rooster, hello dog!

HARVEST OF THE MONTH:  AVOCADOS! You may be inclined to call it a vegetable, thanks to its green hue and savory taste, but the avocado is technically a fruit. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

MORNING DROP OFF LINE - The morning traffic line occasionally needs extra help. All you do is ask the crossing guard – “Do you need an extra volunteer?”.  This is also an excellent way to transition young kids toward independence by saying goodbye at the gate and then volunteering on the traffic line.   Thanks again for helping to keep our kids safe.

DIVERSITY VOLUNTEERS NEEDED! - We’re looking for a few awesome volunteers to help with Black History Month (February) and Cinco De Mayo (May) events.  Please contact Jody.chow@lanairoad.net for more information.

LOST AND FOUND - Please contact Shauna Green at shasogreene@sbcglobal.net if you have a few extra minutes while on campus to help organize or donate items.
