Prime, composite, prepositions, character and lots of turkey talk! For a short week, our students sure did a lot! This week our fourth graders were working on arrays, factors, and prime and composite numbers. I watched as our students worked in groups using color counters to form different arrays of 36 - 1 row of 36; 2 rows of 18; 3 rows of 12; 4 rows of 9; and 6 rows of 6. They then spoke of the factors of 36 and that when determining factors, 4 x 9 is the same as 9 x 4; thus, reverse ordered pairs are counted only once. The fourth graders went on to discussing prime and composite numbers. They came up with definitions of prime and composite numbers based on the rules they discovered: composite numbers have at least 3 factors; the number 2 is prime; the number 1 is neither prime nor composite. They used those rules to determine the prime numbers 1-20. Ask your fourth grader to list them for you!
On Wednesday, our Student Council presented a “Family Feud” on the character trait of Responsibility. The students with the help Ali P., wrote, rehearsed and performed a skit which asked the contestants about what responsibility looks like at home and school. Please take a few minutes to discuss with your child ways they can show responsibility - clear the table; make their own bed; feed the animals; check that their backpack is ready; etc. Having your child be responsible for his/her own things as well as helping the family provides your child the confidence that he/she is self-reliant. This is very important as he/she matures and needs to assume greater independence and responsibilities.
Over, under, behind, between, next to, on, by….and the prepositions go on! Our kindergarteners were learning many prepositions through turkey talk! They were completing booklets that have a turkey placed in different locations to highlight prepositions. In addition, our kindergarteners and their parents enjoyed participating in the classroom celebrations honoring the Thanksgiving holiday.
I’d also like to introduce our new resource teacher, Mrs. Ilene Miles. She has worked as a resource teacher and substitute in LAUSD schools as well as in another district. Mrs. Miles is working in classrooms, the resource room, and at IEP meetings. If your child receives special education services, Mrs. Miles as well as Ms. Freeman will be supporting him/her. Both teachers are very supportive of all our students, thus, other students, not receiving Special Education services, may still benefit from their support in the classrooms as they work with small groups.
Finally, a reminder that we need to be contentious and respectful to our neighbors - especially during drop off and pick up. One of our neighbors called and was very concerned because he’d witnessed a driver crossing a double yellow line, driving north on Lanai and making an illegal left turn into his driveway and using it as a drop-off zone. Let’s all be extra careful and model what responsibility looks like when we drive.
Wishing you and your family a Happy Thanksgiving!

BYOB: Bring Your Own Lip Balm - With the changing weather, we've had an influx of children coming into the office requesting lip balm for chapped lips. While we are happy to offer a swab of petroleum jelly from a jar, it is most ideal for those with frequent dry lips to come to school with their own lip balm/chapstick/vaseline. With all personal items including jackets, lunchboxes and water bottles, please label it with your child's first and last name so that it could be returned to them if misplaced.
