True blue--Trustworthiness is the word this week at Lanai as our students went to Character Assemblies that demonstrated why keeping your word is important. Our very talented Character Committee (Ali, Deidre, and Amy) performed 3 skits: the importance of being a responsible pet owner; how you need to be truthful with babysitters when parents are out; and the difference between “tattle-telling” and when to report an issue to an adult. Our students related to the scenarios and participated in the lively discussion after the performances.
If you created a new candy, what would it be: Rainbow Candies, Taffy Tree, Flying Cake, Twirls? The third graders were busy selling their candy confections after reading Charlie and Chocolate Factory. Our students wrote persuasive essays about why you should buy their candy and then presented it as a commercial. I heard lots of convincing reasons to purchase those new candies—makes you fast and hyper, a favorite of many celebrities, you turn the colors of the rainbow, and they taste great—now if they can develop a calorie-free chocolate bar, I’m sold!
Finally, I saw number sense in action in second grade this week! Our students were adding two-digit numbers while decomposing one of the two numbers to help the other addend make a 10. In simpler terms: If you add 53 + 18 our students decomposed the number 53 to be 51 +2 and gave the 2 to 18 to make 20. Thus, the new problem is written as 51 + 20 = 71. This understanding and flexibility with numbers is crucial in gaining fluency and later with more complex problems.
Wishing you a weekend filled with candy, trust and lots of decomposing numbers!

MORNING DROP OFF LINE - The morning traffic line occasionally needs extra help. So, for the rest of the year if you are walking your kids to up to school and willing to help out for a few minutes, all you have to do is ask the crossing guard – “Do you need an extra volunteer?”. This is also an excellent way to transition young kids toward independence by saying goodbye at the gate and then volunteering on the traffic line. Thanks again for helping to keep our kids safe.
