Lanai Weekly: May 15 - 19, 2017
This has been an exciting week of hands-on Science learning at Lanai with lots of cool activities! On Monday, our 5th graders headed off to Pali Camp and had a wonderful 3 days! One of the activities in which they participated was designing and building rockets out of plastic 1-liter bottles. Then, they launched and measured the height achieved before the rocket fell to the ground. Another inquiry-based activity in which they shared was designing a container or shell that enabled a balloon to withstand a 25-foot drop! Splash!! Finally, the fifth graders engaged in physical, mental and social challenges with the support of their classmates as they went on different ropes, height, and balance courses. They returned Wednesday afternoon with lots of fun experiences to share!
More fun science for the second graders as they went on a walking field trip to our neighbor across the street and picnicked on their lovely grounds. They also were treated to a visit by Matt the Reptile Guy who shared some very interesting friends—lizards, snakes, tarantulas, a tortoise, and a few other crawly creatures! Ask your second grader the difference between viviparous, oviparous and ovoviviparous—Matt explained it all to them. You might also ask your child about the two ducks who have taken up their annual residence at Lanai. Which category do they belong? Those ducks feel just as comfortable here as our students! It begs the question: Who came first, our students or the ducks?
We have good news! The District has approved our request for security cameras and buzzers on the front office door and by the faculty lounge entrance. This was a collaboration among all our stakeholders--School Site Council, parents, staff and the support of School Board President, Steve Zimmer. We appreciate the efforts and concern of all who were instrumental in helping make Lanai as safe as possible.
On another note, our fourth graders in rooms 13 and 20 took the English Language Arts section of the SBAC this week and will complete the Math portion next week. Thank you for making sure your child is well-rested, has eaten a good breakfast, and is reminded not to rush. The SBAC is untimed and students are given the time they need.
And finally, our students know what to do during an emergency drill! On Tuesday, we had a “Drop, Cover and Hold” drill. The students took cover in the event of a real earthquake or other emergency. Parents, if you find yourself on campus during one of our monthly drills, please participate. You never know when a real emergency will occur and our students are watching!
Have a wonderful weekend, and Happy Mother’s’ Day!
