Lanai Weekly: March 6 - 10, 2017

Principal’s Message

Dear Families,

This has been a week full of exciting things at Lanai!  We began our Monday morning assembly with fifth graders leading us in a school-wide Call and Response song as a culmination of Black History month.  Each grade learned about many important Arts contributions of African-Americans through music, visual arts, and literature.  On Wednesday our third graders visited the California Science Center and got to interact with many fun “hands-on” exhibits!  Finally, on Thursday and Friday our entire school participated in our Literacy Fair!  The theme was SPACE and the library was transformed into our solar system with giant planets, activities, books, and more for students to learn and experience!

Saturday is going to be a very big day for many Lanai students!  Four groups of students in grades first-fifth will be participating in the Destination Imagination competition!  I watched the Rising Stars group (first and second graders), rehearse their presentation, “Behold the Stopper Whopper!”  Their challenge was to research, design, create, and present a simple machine that will save the day.  They decided that creating a stop sign with a lever and pulley would be a tool that is especially needed at Lanai (think morning drop-off)!  In addition, they wrote a humorous script with developed characters, and colorful props.   I’m sure we will find a way to use these clever young peoples’ invention to improve our car drop procedure!  We wish them lots of luck as well as our other Destination Imagination teams on Saturday.

Also on Saturday, many of our Chorus students and our Yogis will be performing on the “Thriving in our World” stage at Steam Fest!  The day is sure to be informative, as over 100 schools in Northwest will be there highlighting their unique programs.  Lanai will be there with a booth, so stop by and show your Lion pride!

Finally, we are always looking at ways to improve safety at our school.  We are in the planning stage of having a buzzer and camera installed by our front office to monitor people entering the campus.  We are also refining our morning protocol for students and parents entering school.  Students coming to school before the yard is open will still wait in the auditorium until 7:45 a.m.  Once the yard opens everyone will enter through the gates and go directly to the playground.  School personnel will be at the gate monitoring people entering the campus.   At the 8:15 a.m bell,  students will go to their classrooms with their teachers.  Parents need to leave the campus quickly through the gates.   If you are staying on campus as a volunteer, attending a workshop/meeting etc. you must sign-in and wear your volunteer badge or get a yellow guest sticker from the office.  When you leave, you must sign out.  We feel this is a way to more effectively monitor those entering the school.

As always, we appreciate your support and adherence to our procedures—the safety of our students is always our first concern.

Go Lions!

Lisa Elan
