If you have a few hours a month to help in your child’s classroom, the Art Docent Program may be for you!

The program is run solely by parent volunteers who commit to working in the classroom on a bi-monthly basis. Using a scripted program, your children are introduced to art masters and enjoy hands-on studio art projects. They will learn to recognize artistic elements, become better observers, and expand their vocabulary as they gain a lasting appreciation of art! While our program requires an interest in fine arts, you need not to be an artist to apply. This is a rewarding opportunity to work in the classroom in a creative learning capacity. We supply the paint brushes, just bring your enthusiasm!

We are always in need of additional volunteers to help out with general maintenance in the Art Docent area. This involves sorting and maintenance of art materials and assisting our Docent Coordinators on your schedule.

In an effort to maintain consistency and the overall quality of the Art Docent program, a maximum of 4 volunteers will be selected to teach art in each classroom. Each team will consist of one lead docent and three assistants. Leads are welcome and encouraged to share leading lessons.

Leads responsible for communicating with program coordinators and teacher, set-up/clean-up, teaching lesson from script (plan on spending 2 hours per less; 1/2 hour prep, 1 hour lesson, 1/2 hour clean-up).

Assistants aid students in the classroom and help with materials, set-up/clean-up. Help lead some lessons if desired (plan on spending 2 hours per less; 1/2 hour prep, 1 hour lesson, 1/2 hour clean-up).

Each year we do our best to build classroom teams of volunteers with a mix of abilities; including artistic skills, teaching/leadership experience, and those who enjoy working with children. You need not worry if you don’t paint like Van Gogh! Please do not be discouraged from applying next year if you are not selected. Often times we end up with too many volunteers in a class.

  • You must have regular email access and respond to emails promptly.
  • Be organized and show up to help prep & clean up after your class for each and every lesson all year. Please proved enough lead notice to your lead for days you will miss.
  • Enjoy working with children and have a positive attitude.
  • Parents with children in more than one class, please specify which class you are signing up for. If you are applying for more than one class, please give us your preference.
